Simple ruffle cushion tutorial

I realised that I haven't posted any sewing tutorials for a while..

So today I thought I would share with you how to make a simple ruffle cushion, like this one ...

You will need...

  • Fabric
  • Cushion
  • Zig zag scissors
  • Pins
  • Scissors
  • Cotton
  • Sewing machine ..

To start, lay our fabric, pretty side facing down, place your cushion on top , add and extra 2" all the way around and cut out ..

Depending on the size of your cushion, decided how many ruffles you would like ..

My cushion was only small approx 14" so I decided on 3 mini ruffles

Next cut long fabric strips mine was double the length of my cushion and 2.5" wide!

Next using your zig zag scissors and cut up the long lengths of the strips (this will stop fraying)

Take your strips to your machine, you need to alter you settings to create the ruffle , set your tension to the highest as well as your stitch length ..

Place the foot in the middle of the strip and start sewing, it should start gathering at the back !

Continue these steps, for all your ruffles !

Now, remember to put your setting back to normal, before sewing your cushion together !!!

Place your per-cut fabric on top of your cushion and the position your ruffles where you would like them, pin in place ...

Sew your ruffles in place ..

If you would like to make an envelope closure for your cushion, please follow my other cushion tutorial here!

If your looking for a quick way continue reading ..

To make the back of your cushion, cut another piece of fabric the same size as before, using the cushion as a guide.

Pin the two pieces together, pretty sides together..

Sew, around 3 sides of the cushion, turn right sides out.

Push the cushion into the opening .

Now to close the opening, fold in 1/2" on both sides pinch together, and carefully sew down the opening ..

Making sure you don't sew the cushion !!

Finished

Thank you Louise, you could make the ruffles longer, which I think would look nice too...
